I have a confession to make. I'm obsessed with search.
To those outside the industry, I realize that's tantamount to saying I'm obsessed with flipping through the phone book or reading about the Dewey Decimal System. I get it. It's weird. But hey, we all have our things. Search just happens to be mine.
A perfectly confusing time to enter the SEO industry
My history with search engine optimization began in 2012, right before Google rolled out Penguin, the algorithm update that aimed to reward high quality content by targeting webspam. But what Google called webspam was what a lot of people at the time called SEO. I was extremely confused - basically I entered the SEO industry thinking that Google was some kind of sadistic puppet master.
Turns out, it was actually the perfect time to enter the industry. I got to see search change from tricks and tactics to good, old-fashioned marketing. Google is still and always will be combating spam, but holy cow, I love the SEO of today so much more than the search of yesterday. It's concerned with transparency, not with trying to create value where it doesn't exist -- with being better, not with being able to manipulate search engines better.
Throughout my years as an SEO, I’ve gotten manual penalties lifted, achieved page 1 rankings for highly competitive keywords, launched a site migration team for my digital marketing agency, spearheaded an SEO education program, and above all else, learned to always be learning.
